Finding your Dream Automotive Job

22-10-2019
Job seeker advice

Whether we like it or not, most of us will spend most of our adult lives working so we owe it to ourselves to find a job we enjoy.

Whilst a generous salary, company perks and impressive facilities can all be attractive elements of a role, it is important that you understand exactly what you want from a role and an employer to ensure longevity in your career and happiness.

The Motor Trade alone offers an array of different jobs, all suited to different skills and personality types. If you are just starting out in your career it can feel daunting trying to navigate through the various job titles and descriptions to find the best fit for you. Similarly, if you are already working in the Automotive industry but don’t feel happy in your current role you may feel trapped and unsure what do for the best.

The team at Perfect Placement are experts in finding candidates their dream automotive job. Having been established for more than 16 years and having worked closely throughout this time with thousands of candidates and a diverse range of clients, we know the industry like the back of our hand.

Here we share some of our top tips to help you find the automotive job of your dreams.

Ask yourself: What you truly want from a job?

It’s human nature to be impressed by big salaries, flashy business premises and generous company perks but it’s important to be honest with yourself, will this make you happy? If you’re doing a job that you don’t enjoy, the honest answer is likely to be no! Spend time working out what you are passionate about, what gives you that drive to succeed and do your best? If you love interacting with people and thrive from a high-pressure environment perhaps a role as a Car Sales Executive is right for you. If you’re more technically minded and a great problem solver, you may be best suited in the workshop with roles ranging from Tyre Fitter to Panel Beater, Vehicle Technician to Workshop Controller. Understanding the key things that motivate you will be a great starting point in determining your best job fit.

Focus on your skills and qualifications.

Every job in the Motor Trade requires a specific level of skill, experience and training. For example, to work your way up to Dealer Principal you would need years of automotive experience, a commercial and business background and the skills to manage people. In comparison, a Vehicle Valetor may be hired based on their passion and enthusiasm to learn despite lacking experience. Reflect on where your skills lie, what qualifications you have and what you are passionate about. By focusing on these things during your job search you can easily rule out things that aren’t a match.

Enlist the help of an expert.

Job hunting is a challenge at the best of times; whether you are new to it and not sure where to look or you feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of jobs out there. Furthermore, trying to fit this vital search into a busy schedule, it can feel like a full-time job in itself!
