Is Recruiting For Staff Before Christmas Beneficial To 2015?

03-12-2014
Employer advice

With 2015 rapidly approaching, many dealerships are looking to "fill the gaps" ready to hit the ground running come January. There has been a seemingly high increase in the number of vacancies arising due to expansion alongside positions becoming available to replace staff starting their New Year's resolution with a new challenge or change of environment, but is December the right time for your department to be recruiting?

Speaking to Hiring Managers at all levels over the past few weeks, it appears an opportunity to develop their existing team, to "shake it up" a bit and to further prepare them for the increased targets set by the manufacture come January.

Why should you be looking to make your New Year hires during the month of December?

Everybody knows January is chaos - Budget planning, new product releases, planning for the year, management meetings and staff reviews, target-setting, the list goes on. Expectations for the New Year are always high. Are you really going to have the time to interview and hire your new member of staff who you needed to start in the business a week ago? That teamed with a standard notice period of one month, your newest member of staff won't be able to get through the door until February!

Competition is fierce - A lot of businesses will be looking for new recruits come January. The CV you have seen which you feel is a perfect pick for your business will have landed on the desk of almost every other hiring manager in your area. This makes the hiring process that bit trickier. Your finger must be on the pulse, you must be able to drop everything to see that candidate at the earliest opportunity and will need the flexibility to be extra-competitive with a job offer, otherwise, you will lose out. December hiring ensures you have the pick of the crop, and can afford to take your time and make sensible offers.

Q4 hiring is a proven strategy - Whilst a lot of companies will make hiring decisions throughout Q1-Q3, Q4 typically sees a decline in the numbers of new staff, especially as it reaches December. , This could be due to reluctance to pay new staff during the slower months of December, reluctance to further reduce your dwindling budget, not enough resources to train a new member of staff due to festive holidays and skeleton staff. But are you making a mistake? Why not get someone in during December so they can learn the ropes at their own pace, and be ready to hit the ground running and start earning the company money in the New Year.
