Has Augmented Reality (AR) Got Mileage In The Motor Trade?

22-07-2016
Industry news

Last week you may have seen our blog post, a light-hearted blog encouraging motor trade dealers to take part in the PokémonGO hype, encouraging garages to dress their staff in costumes. Along those lines, if you are like me your LinkedIn news feed has been filled with updates of rare Pokémon sited on Dealer forecourts and Pokestops at local garages to restock your supplies.

As one of Perfect Placement’s leading trainers (and the proud owner of a 620 strength Aerodactyl), this is all very much a dream come true for me. However, the success of PokémonGO may well be more significant for the Automotive Industry than just screenshots of Growlithes in a showroom and reception staff dressed as Pikachu.

One of the biggest stories and successes of the App has been the Augmented Reality element of the game. The AR essentially uses your smartphone's camera to impose the in-app Pokémon into the real world surroundings through your screen. Pokémon go has thrown AR back into the limelight at a time when virtual reality had been gaining more attention thanks to the introduction of Samsung Gear VR or the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift headsets.

What does AR have to do with the motor trade then? I’m definitely not suggesting that you should be playing PokémonGo in the car like this GTA mod but there are plenty of other applications for AR.

Recently Hyundai has built an Augmented Reality App to act as a virtual guide for users engine basics, but, perhaps more exciting developments are integrated AR windscreen displays. Heads Up Displays have begun to give us a taste of Augmented Reality displays and as far back as 2014 Jaguar have teased AR windscreen displays. More recently BMW’s headline-grabbing Vision Next 100 concept replaced the dashboard with AR and Toyota has patented an AR windshield.

So does the idea of an AR windscreen excite you or are you terrified of the idea of this staring back at you when you are driving in the future?

Whatever your thoughts the success of PokémonGo looks to have cemented AR’s place in the mainstream, now if you will excuse me there is a Blastoise in the car park I have to capture.

Gotta Catch ‘em All!
