Automotive Career Guide – General Sales Manager

As a General Sales Manager you will be responsible for the success of the Sales Department within your Dealership. This includes driving sales, maximising profitability, managing stock levels, developing your team and ensuring that targets are met, all while placing customer service at the centre of the operation.

Based in a Main Dealership, a General Sales Manager will need to be a strategic thinker who can create high quality marketing and promotion strategies, monitor competitor activity and identify new opportunities to maximise profit. There is an element of administration attached to this role including submitting weekly reports to the Regional General Manager therefore a successful Sales Manager will be organised and able to meet deadlines.

This role is very target driven, as such excellent leadership skills are required to drive the performance of the team. As General Sales Manager you would be expected to motivate and support your sales team to reach and exceed targets whilst ensuring processes are followed and that the team are fully compliant. It is essential that you understand and convey all aspects of financial and insurance product regulations to the team.

Since this is a senior role, employers will generally look for ambitious individuals who can demonstrate both an exceptional career history and sustained success in a similar role in the motor trade. This could include Business Manager, Sales Controller or highly experienced and driven Senior Sales Executives who are looking for the next step in their career. You will report into Senior/ Regional Managers and Directors therefore the ability to communicate with people at levels of the business, including the customer, is vital. A full UK driving license is also a common requirement for this role.

Typical hours for this role are around 40 hours per week and this will generally include some weekend working, depending on the employer and the needs of the business.  In return, you will be rewarded with a great salary, usually between £30-£45k, the opportunity to earn high bonuses and other benefits such as a company car.
