Working for an Independent Garage – Management

05-09-2019
Job seeker advice

Independent Garages generally offer employees more chance to make a real impact on the success of the business compared to working for a Main Dealership and this is certainly true when it comes to the Management Team.

The Independent Garage sector is saturated and highly competitive. They compete against Main Dealerships in terms of reputation and perceived higher standards of service as well as competition from other local garages on price, quality and service amongst other things. Despite this, a recent report showed that 70% of UK motorists chose to use an Independent Garage for Services, MOTs and Repairs meaning business is thriving for the Independent Garages who get things right.

Managing an Independent Garage is a hands-on role with many elements to it. These businesses have to market themselves, win trade from their competitors, recruit and retain talent and build a positive reputation as well as generating a profit.

Depending on the size of the garage there could be a few management positions including a Workshop Controller, a Front of House Manager and a Centre Manager. There may also be a Team Leader depending on how many Technicians are employed in the workshop. Having passionate managers who are knowledgeable about the Motor Trade and aren’t afraid of a challenge is key to the success of an Independent Garage.

Day to day duties of a Garage Manager typically include managing the staff, driving workshop productivity, growing sales and maintaining all records and paperwork. It is also important that a Manager can create and implement a strategy for wider business growth, retaining customers and identifying new opportunities.
