Job seeker advice

The Parts Team of an Independent Garage play a very important role in ensuring the operation runs smoothly and efficiently and that customers have a good experience, something which is vital to the success of an Independent Garage.

Depending on the size of the garage there could be a Parts Team or a single Parts Advisor who has the overall responsibility of ordering and receiving parts, maintaining stock levels, handling customer queries and ensuring the workshop has the right part at the right time. Some independent Dealerships may also sell parts so it is important that the Parts Sales people have a strong understand of vehicle parts combined with great customer service skills.

Working in the Parts Department requires people who are highly organised, have strong communication skill and are committed to working with the wider team. The Independent Garage sector is a competitive market so speed and ease of service is a critical part of ensuring repeat business. This means garages should have good relationships with parts factors who will deliver the required parts and commercial awareness to prevent being over stocked on items.

Experienced Parts Advisors can see their career progress in different directions as they build up so much knowledge. They can work their way up in an Independent Garage in other roles such as Aftersales Manager or they could work for a Parts Factor and become a Parts Controller then work their way up to a Parts Manager role.
