Working for an Independent Garage - Sales Department

05-09-2019
Job seeker advice

Independently run garages operate in a competitive market. They compete against Main Dealerships in terms of reputation and perceived standards of service and also compete against the many other independent garages on product quality, price and service amongst other things. Despite this, a recent report showed that 70% of UK motorists chose to use an Independent Garage for Services, MOTs and Repairs meaning business is thriving across the country for the independent sector.

With a variety of roles on offer in Independent Garages and a perception that they provide a more cost effective and more personalised service, they make for an attractive career choice for many Sales People in the Motor Trade.

An Independent Dealership can sell a range of second hand vehicles or specialise in a single or dual manufacturer or in a type of vehicle for example Commercial Vehicles, Vans, Motorhomes, or Motorbikes. A Salesperson in an Independent Garage is expected to have comprehensive knowledge of the vehicles on sale and will deliver a tailored service to each customer having listened to their requirements.

An experienced and trusted Car Sales Executive working at an independently run Dealership is usually given more autonomy compared to working for a large franchise. They can often use their own judgement to make decisions and be more flexible on prices compared to a Main Dealership. There’s often more of an opportunity to make a big difference in the success of the operation working for an Independent.
