Job seeker advice

Accident Repair Centres repair and restore damaged vehicles after an accident or crash. They can be Main Dealer run Bodyshops or independently run Accident Repair Centres. A successful Bodyshop requires a range of skills across a variety of roles which collectively make up the Bodyshop team, headed up by the Bodyshop Controller.

Working at an Accident Repair Centre means working on a diverse range of vehicles; from cars, vans and light commercial vehicles to motorbikes, caravans and motorhomes including a variety of different makes and models. This also means working with different materials, engine types, hydraulic systems and electrical/electronic components so specialist skills and knowledge is crucial to ensure repairs are completed accurately and to the highest standards.

Vehicle Mechanical, Electrical and Trim Technicians, also known as METs are the people responsible for assessing the mechanical and electrical components of the damaged vehicles and repairing or replacing anything that is no longer sufficient. They will typically use diagnostic equipment to assess any electrical faults as well as fixing any mechanical damage such as suspension, engine or steering issues. Most MET Technicians are fully qualified with at least an NVQ Level 3 and work closely with the rest of the Bodyshop team advising on any additional work that may be required throughout the repair process.

There is plenty of scope for progression for an MET Technician, with the right skill and attitude they can progress to Senior MET Technician on to Supervisor and then become Bodyshop Controller. With many Accident Repair businesses offering regular training opportunities they are an attractive career option for many talented Automotive employees.
