Automotive Career Guide - Parts Manager

Job seeker advice

A Parts Manager is responsible for managing a parts team which typically includes Parts Advisors, Parts Drivers and Parts Sales Representatives. The primary duties include ensuring the profitability and efficient running of the Parts Department by coaching and developing the team, managing the sourcing and supplying of vehicle parts to new and existing clients, and ensuring customer service is prioritised at all times.

Typically a Parts Manager will be based within a Dealership and will either report into the Dealer Principal or Group Parts Manager depending on the structure of the business. A significant element of this role is the management of stock meaning it is important that the candidate can review and understand key operating controls such as negative stock reports, PDR's, margin and volume performance.

Since this role depends heavily on reaching sales targets and driving the department forward through efficiency of service, employers generally look for someone with a proven track record of sales success, experience in managing people and good knowledge of the automotive industry. A Parts Manager should be self-motivated, enthusiastic and act as a mentor for their team. Previous experience of working in a Car Dealership is an advantage.

Typical working hours for this role are around 40 hours per week and this can include some weekend working depending on the needs of the business. Basic salaries range between £25K-£30K with the opportunity to earn targeted bonuses.
