Automotive Career Guide- PCV Technician

A PCV Technician works specifically on Passenger Carrying Vehicles, these include buses, minibuses and multi-seater taxis. The main duties attributed to this role include servicing Light Commercial Vehicles, carrying out checks and maintenance according to the manufacturers' guidelines, repairing and replacing faulty parts and components and maintaining repair and service records.

As a PCV Technician you would typically be based is a busy Commercial Vehicle Workshop and would report into the Workshop Controller. Working closely with the rest of the service team you will ensure that work is carried out to the highest standards and that all health and safety standards are adhered to.

Due to the size of the vehicles involved in this job, employers will generally look for a Fully Qualified Technician. Some will ask for experience of working with LCV’s and HGV’s however, this could also be a great stepping stone for an experienced Car Technician with the right attitude and willingness to learn.

The average working hours for a PCV Vehicle Technician are around 40 hours per week and this will generally include some weekend and out of hours work. Some Commercial Bodyshops will offer roadside repairs so a full UK Driving license is required for this role as well as being open to additional work on a rota basis. In return, you will be rewarded with a great salary; usually between £20k -£30k (plus overtime) depending on the location of the Bodyshop and experience of the individual.
