Working in an Independent Garage offers a diverse range of rewarding career prospects.

An Independent Garage may sell cars or simply service and repair vehicles. From a vehicle sales perspective, they can sell a range of second hand vehicles or specialise in a single or dual manufacturer or in a type of vehicle for example Commercial Vehicles, Vans, Motorhomes, or Motorbikes. An Independent Dealership will have a team of Sales Representatives and Sales Managers in order to facilitate the process just like any other Dealership would.

From the service and repair side of things, an Independent Garage will carry out the same repair and maintenance processes as a Dealership Bodyshop including MOT’s, Servicing, replacing tyres, exhausts, batteries, brakes, clutches, and more. They usually charge customers less than a Main Dealership because they have lower overhead costs.

Many will be family run businesses and will rely on word of mouth to gain new customers, for this reason they will place extra attention on delivering exceptional levels of service.

Working at an Independent Garage, you will be expected to work on a diverse range of vehicles; from cars, vans and light commercial vehicles to motorbikes, caravans and motorhomes as well as a range of manufacturers. Since the size of these businesses is smaller than that of a Main Dealership it is likely that at times, all members of the team will have to pitch in and help out with various tasks outside of their typical job description. For example; a mechanic may have to speak directly to the customer and explain the work that is being carried out.

A Tyre Technician may have to assist the Technicians if the workshop gets busy and the role of a workshop controller is likely to be more hands on.
