Automotive Career Guide - Motor Trade Workshop Controller

02-07-2019
Job seeker advice

The role of Workshop Controller is part manager and also the main point of contact between the Service Department and the Technicians. The main duties attached to this role include assigning technicians tasks, ensuring productivity is maximised and that deadlines are adhered to, monitor the progress of repairs and communicate any delays, ensure all work is completed to the manufacturer and brand guidelines and act as a mentor to your team.

Based in a busy workshop, it is important that a Workshop Controller works well under pressure and can manage a team effectively.  Supporting and giving feedback to Technicians on their quality and efficiency forms part of this role in order to maximise the productivity of the workshop.

Naturally, due to the nature of the job, you will need to have a full UK/EU Driving Licence and experience within a busy automotive workshop. This is a great step up for a highly experienced, over achieving Service Technician who is looking to progress in their career. You will be expected to support colleagues with knowledge, skills and expertise to improve business performance and profit which is why experience is crucial.

Typical working hours for a Workshop Controller are up to 40 hours per week and this will usually involve some weekend working. Average salaries range between £24K-£26K and as a Workshop Controller you will usually have the opportunity to earn a generous annual bonus.
