Automotive Career Guide -Product Specialist

Job seeker advice

The role of a Product Specialist or Product Genius involves interacting directly with customers and informing them of the benefits of owning a vehicle through a non-pressured service approach. It is important to note that a Product Specialist is not a Sales Executive, rather you will be an expert in all things to do with the brand and its services and will deliver exceptional customer service by conversing with customers and sharing your knowledge.

Based in a Main Dealership and working alongside the Sales team, you will act as a first point of contact for new and existing customers. A successful Product Specialist will be able to promote the brand, products and technologies, sharing information, features and benefits in a friendly, understandable way without pressuring the customer in any way. A Product Specialist should be enthusiastic, keen to learn and be a team player. You will be expected to pass customers onto the Sales Executives and also work closely with the Aftersales team to handle any product related enquires. Most employers will look for someone with a full UK Driving license as it is likely you will be required to carry out test drives and vehicle handovers.

As a Product Specialist you will report into the Sales Manager and will benefit from regular training by the manufacturer to ensure you are fully equipped with knowledge of all their latest products. This is a great entry level role to the Automotive industry as you will learn many transferrable skills. The natural next steps for progression would be to Sales Executive and then Senior Sales Executive.

The average working hours for a Product Specialist are around 40 hours per week and this will generally include some weekend work. In return, you will be rewarded with a salary ranging between £17k-£20k depending on the location of the Bodyshop and experience of the individual.
